We're Teaching Tech 101, a club at Capistrano Valley High School turned youth-led volunteer initiative that connects generations by solving tech problems, one conversation at a time, through our in-person Teaching Tech 101 senior home and city-partnered events. We also share digital literacy information via video guide series, Tech Tuesday, on our Instagram account: @teachingtech101. We've been recognized with the Mission Viejo Kiwanis Club Distinguished Achievement Award and the CVHS Foundation Award for Outstanding Service.
Since our founding in Fall 2024, Teaching Tech 101 has worked to bridge the digital divide between high school students and senior citizens. Over the course of 20+ events, our volunteers have supported over 225+ senior citizens across two senior homes and city-partnered events. By offering one-on-one guidance, we’ve helped seniors navigate their smartphones, connect with loved ones, and build confidence with technology—while also creating meaningful intergenerational connections.
One of our Social Media Assistants, Rachel Castillo, shared, "I always look forward to Teach Tech 101 events because I'm able to connect with the seniors and help them learn more about their devices. "
“Teaching Tech 101 started after years of assisting my grandmother with her own troubles, navigating her smartphone with all its features. The process was routine: get a call, go to her, help her, write it down, have her repeat the process to me a few times, and go home. However, this cycle broke when I taught her how to use her notes app; she told me that she was the only one out of her trivia group that knew how to use most of the features on her smartphone because of me. At that moment it hit me, not every senior citizen in our community has children or grandchildren helping them navigate their smart device and when they do seek help, they are left confused and forget how it works the next day, so when I left that afternoon, I knew I had to do something and by the time I went to bed that night, Teaching Tech 101 was born.”
